Business analysis certification: The what and why?

What is business analysis?

As per International Institute of Business Analysis, Business Analysis is the practice of enabling change in an organisational context, by defining needs and recommending solutions that deliver value to stakeholders. The set of tasks and techniques that are used to perform business analysis are defined in A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK® Guide).

Why gain a certification in business analysis?

It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in – business analysis will always be in demand. To do any analysis you do not need to have a 'Business Analyst' title.

Business Analysis can be found in most modern business strategy, helping to cut costs, select a technology for the business, improve efficiency and spot opportunities for growth, analyse a solution or enterprise limitations, assess risks, and much more.

According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)*, employment of management analysts - including business analysts - is expected to grow 14% from 2018 to 2028, which is much faster than the average of all occupations.

Here’s more good news: foundational business analysis skills are applicable in almost any field. Depending on the field, there’s potentially no or little technical knowledge required.

Business analysis education and training

Most employers require business analysts to have a minimum of a bachelors degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Management, or Business Administration or similar. Some employers may prefer to hire candidates with postgraduate or higher qualification with some specialisation.

Simply, for individuals who wish to embark on a career as a business analyst, the first step can be a bachelor’s degree.

However, having a business analysis focused certification under the belt with globally recognised best practices can be rewarding for those looking to step fresh in the business analysis field with or without above mentioned degree. Additionally, having a focused course can provide an exciting platform for seasoned professionals looking for next set of challenges in their career.

The BA Practice offers globally recognised and International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) approved courses such as:

  1. Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA): The ECBA certificate is designed for people who are just getting started in the field. Getting this certification requires undertaking an examination and a minimum of 21 professional development hours.

  2. Certification of Capability in Business Analysis (CCBA): The CCBA certification is intended for business people with 2-3 years of experience and requires at least 2 x references, an exam, minimum 3,750 hours of business analysis experience in the last 7 years and 21 hours of professional development.

  3. Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP): The CBAP certification is an advanced certification that requires candidates to have minimum 7,500 hours of experience in the BA field over the last 10 years as well as 35 hours of professional development in addition to two references and a passing score on the exam.

Is it a MUST for me to have a degree in Information Technology, Business Management or similar to be a business analyst?

Having a degree certainly helps to prove to the employer this is your preferred field and you have minimum knowledge required to apply in the organisation. However, not-having a degree is certainly not an end of the world.

We strongly recommend you to pursue courses provided by The BA Practice that will certainly help understanding business analysis focused knowledge areas and tasks defined in the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge provided by the International Institute of Business Analysis. Additionally, these certifications will help you demonstrate to your future employer that you possess the minimum knowledge required to fulfill your next business analysis role.
